Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, was developed by Gary Craig, an engineer and Stanford graduate, in the 1990s. He streamlined and simplified the work of psychologist Roger Callahan and his Thought Field Therapy (TFT) into a simpler process for a more accessible and widely applicable method. EFT combines cognitive reframing (focusing on a problem and making acceptance statements) with the principles of acupressure (tapping on specific points) to address emotional and physical distress.
In their book, EFT For Christians, by Dr. Charity Virkler Kayembe and Sherrie Rice Smith, R.N. share the following information:
The process of EFT is based on fairly new neuroscience research that shows how emotional trauma contributes directly to many, if not all, diseases. This research shows that “tapping” reduces the emotional charge around our negatively impactful memories and events that still trigger our emotional distress today, even though the incidents may have happened decades ago.
EFT neutralizes the emotional charge of old traumatic memories that causes us stress, anxiety, and worry today. It is in that stress neutralization that our bodies seem to heal, releasing the anxiety and worry about both the past and the future.
As we enter into the holiday season at the end of this year, I have been sharing with my clients some tapping algorithms that can help as people begin to gather with family. If this is the first time celebrating some of these major holidays without a loved one due to a divorce or a death, it can be a stressful time emotionally. The grief tapping algorithm can be a helpful tool, in giving people a way to process the emotions and memories in a healthy way.
Grief Tapping Algorithm:
Eyebrows- Under Eyes- Collarbones- Bilaterals
With moderate pressure, tap at the acupoints as listed about 3-5 times, while thinking about the grief emotions being released. After tapping on the acupoints, the person will cross their arms across their chest and tap on the upper arms back and forth, left to right for about 20 seconds. This helps the left and right hemispheres of the brain, or the logical and emotional sides of the brain to begin realigning. The tapping algorithm can be repeated as needed.
These strategies are so simple to use, even children can effectively use them. I hope that this encourages you to explore the benefits that tapping can bring to you and your families! Blessings of comfort and peace as you gather together.
