Treasures of Generational Inheritance

The holidays are quickly approaching and for many people that means time with family members that we might not see throughout the year. Although that thought may trigger feelings of dread for some individuals, for others the anticipation and excitement of seeing children and grandchildren that live at a distance is hard to contain. Whatever time with family holds for each of us, God relates to us generationally. He calls himself the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when he appeared to Moses,

God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers- the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob- has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation,” (Exodus 3:15, NIV).

What an incredible statement made by God himself, that he asks to be known and remembered by name as the God of our fathers, a generational God. The depth of love and security that is contained in that nature of our Heavenly Father, is greater than we can comprehend. He created family and has set us in families, the greatest being His family. Within each family He has placed treasures of inheritance. These are the beautiful manifold characteristics of God’s nature that we have been designed to display upon the earth. We have been made in His image, male and female.

Because of the pain that we experience in relationships within our family, we can easily focus on the negative characteristics of our family. However, by the Spirit of God, we can look through a lens of redemption and begin to see the treasures that God has deposited within our family line. The enemy is called a thief because he likes to trade and steal those treasures for himself, robbing us of the joy of generational blessings. But God has empowered us, by His loving Spirit to recognize the beautiful tapestry He has woven all throughout the generations in our family lines and to take back the treasures that are often hidden in darkness. These treasures are multifaceted and diverse, encompassing a wide range of gifts and qualities that flow from the Father’s nature like love, justice, mercy, power, and wisdom just to name a few. When pain keeps us separated we lose sight of the beautiful generational tapestry that the Father is continuing to weave and connect by His spirit and bonds of love with those generations who have passed on to glory before us. We are called as the Family of God and Body of Christ, the church, to display this generational strength and beauty to the heavenly realms.

His intent was that now through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, (Ephesians 3:10-11, NIV).

The generations walking the earth, have the incredible opportunity to allow Jesus to transform our bloodline through His precious blood and bring from the dust the glory and heavenly treasures that is our godly inheritance hidden in earthly vessels for the heavenly realms to see.

Steps in Pursuit

  1. 2 Corinthians 4:7 talks about the treasure we carry in jars of clay. Read this passage and ask God to shine light on the treasures that your family carries and are called to display on earth.
  2. When the enemy has stolen things throughout the generations, in the authority of Jesus we are able to take back those treasures. Ask God to show you godly inheritance that He wants you to reclaim.
  3. Over the holidays practice thanking God for treasures He originally placed in your generational line. Although they may be hidden in darkness, Holy Spirit can highlight them to you and release forgiveness in your heart for the ways they have been distorted or hidden in the past.

We are called to be repairers of the breach:

And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach…(Isaiah 58:12, ESV)

Continue the Pursuit,
