In our recent Living Well University class, we discussed the importance of our endocrine system and hormones. The endocrine system is a network of glands that produce and release hormones, which are chemical messengers that regulate various bodily functions. These hormones influence nearly every cell, organ, and function in the body, including mood, metabolism, growth, and sexual development. The endocrine system helps maintain a stable internal environment by regulating fluid balance, body temperature, and other vital functions.
One thing that we recognized was how common it is for young people to navigate through hormonal changes with very little instruction or conversation taking place to prepare them for the transitions their body would be going through as they develop from children into young adults and beyond. I want to share some information that I believe will encourage hormonal harmony in both your individual body and your household as you have open and honest conversations with your loved ones.
Children:
- Start having conversations early and often, use accurate and age-appropriate language, and normalize the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. Provide a safe space for ongoing questions.
- Focus on developing healthy habits that will continue into adulthood, such as: hygiene, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and mental health.
- Model for your children a positive body image and emphasize their inner qualities: highlighting kindness, intelligence, and other positive traits over physical appearance.
Teenagers:
- Continue to reassure your teenagers in ongoing conversations that the changes they are experiencing are normal and that hormonal changes can look a little different for each person.
- Avoid making judgmental comments: teenagers can be very sensitive to any comments on their appearance, weight, or body size. Encourage them to lovingly accept themselves through the process.
- Model a positive attitude with your own hormonal fluctuations. One of the challenges in supporting hormone balance is moving away from a negative mindset about hormones and begin viewing our amazing created body from the mindset of partnering with God in all they have to offer us.
Adults:
- Maintain balanced nutrition: eat enough protein and healthy fats, limit sugar intake, support gut health.
- Regular exercise: improves insulin sensitivity, helps manage stress by lowering cortisol levels, enhances mood by triggering the release of endorphins.
- Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques.
- Avoid harmful toxins: chemicals in cleaning products, cosmetics, and plastics can disrupt hormonal balance.
If you are experiencing persistent or severe symptoms related to potential hormone imbalance, such as fatigue, mood swings, irregular periods, unexplained weight changes or sleep disturbances, consult with a healthcare professional to explore various treatment options which may include bioidentical hormone replacement therapy in some cases.
Steps in Pursuit
- If you have younger children in your home, begin developing the habit of praising God for the way he made their bodies and nurture gratitude for the changes they experience.
- Help teenagers begin to track fluctuations with their hormones monthly. This can include learning how to be prepared for their monthly menstrual cycle to managing emotional changes.
- As an adult, honestly evaluate some areas that could promote hormonal harmony from dietary changes to exploring options to replace any depleted hormones.
Experiencing healthy hormones promotes a more positive view of ourselves and allows us to live more fully from an identity rooted in love and acceptance. This not only promotes health in our bodies, but it will bring greater harmony in relationships as well.
Continue the Pursuit,
