Angelic beings have played a big role throughout the history of creation. From written history to art, angels are woven in the fabric of humanity’s story on earth. Even though angelic activity is very common on a daily basis, we often go about unaware of the important role that angels play in our lives. The Bible presents a very different picture of how people in times past interacted with the spirit realm and angels. Angels appeared in both the Old Testament stories and the New Testament to carry out assignments from God.
The book of Hebrews in the New Testament describes the spiritual authority and roles of Jesus and the angels.
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right had of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. In Speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire.” But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? (Hebrews 1:3-4, 7-8, 14, NIV).
Angels carry out important tasks as they minister to us.
- They protect us- Psalm 91:11-12 “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will life you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”
- They care for us- Matthew 4:11 “Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.”
- They guard us throughout life- Matthew 18:10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”
- They bring messages from God- Acts 27:23-24 “Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.”
When I am ministering in my counseling sessions, I am often spiritually aware of the presence of angels, actively involved as we are praying and seeking healing from God. Although I may not see them with my physical eyes, I sense their presence and am encouraged that we are surrounded by the angelic spirits that are a part of our Kingdom life in Jesus Christ.
Steps in Pursuit
- Spend some time becoming familiar with the activities of angel that are found in the Bible. Recognize that the angels still serve us in the same ways today.
- Prayerfully ask God to increase your spiritual discernment of the angels that are around your life. In scripture, the angels have names. Ask God to reveal the names of your ministering angels.
- Showing honor to others is an important spiritual principle. As we acknowledge and honor the role that angels have in our lives, we will begin to build a loving relationship with our heavenly family.
